Algae: Mining Wastewater for Nutrients, Feed and Fuel

With US fresh water supplies slowly dwindling and algaeculture quickly becoming the centerpiece of bioenergy/bioremediation research, we must carefully examine our water and nutrient sources for an efficient, sustainable algal industry. This workshop explores how to minimize algae´s fresh water and nutrient footprints by recycling anthropogenic wastewater streams including agricultural, municipal, and industrial while at the same time producing a host of valuable algal end products. In addition, we will learn of algae´s tremendous potential as a cost-effective bioremediation tool for wastewater streams, effecting a more stable and healthy ecosystem.

Confirmed speakers include:

Mark Zivojnich/Hydromentia
Aron Stubbins/ Old Dominion University- Deputy Director of Virginia Coastal Energy Research Consortium
Bob Vitale/WaterWheel Factory
Dr. Michael Baron
Victoria Kurtz/Fluid Imaging
Chuck Pardue/Algae Bioenergy Solutions, LLCter link.
Dr. Kim Jones/Alganomics
Lucas McConnell/Renewergy Corp

Who Should Attend

Algal researchers and companies, investors, water treatment consultants, water treatment companies, agricultural leaders, farmers, municipal wastewater handlers, industrial wastewater producers including meat and poultry, pulp and paper, textiles, dyes and pigments, food and dairy, starch and cellulose, pesticides and insecticides, metal finishers, chemical, drug formulation.

Topics of discussion will include:

  • The economics of wastewater streams and effects on our environment
  • Win/win potential for algae-based wastewater bioremediation
  • Making algae production/bioremediation a double income stream
  • Identifying roadblocks to mass scale algae production using wastewater
  • Matching wastewater streams with appropriate algal strains and system
  • Examining potential for feed, fuel and fertilizer end products
  • Optimizing open pond and closed loop algae/wastewater systems

For reservations, call Holiday Inn Research Park at 256-830-0600 and ask for NAA rates (although we cannot guarantee that the NAA rate is the lowest available rate at the facility).
